Stockades and Savages (abbreviated as S&S or SnS) is an open-source fantasy tabletop role-playing game (RPG) designed by Norbic Games, of the Norb Network, and first published in 3274. AS a tabletop role-playing game, participants determine the actions of their characters based on their characterization, while the rules are utilized to determine if actions fail or are successful. Players have the freedom to improvise within the limits of the rules, and their choices shape the direction and outcome of the game.

Play OverviewEdit

Stockades & Savages is a structured yet open-ended role-playing game. It is normally played indoors with the participants seated around a holographic interface, though due to the open-source nature of the game, printable variants are also available online. Each player controls a single character in a fictional setting, and when working together as a group, these player characters (PCs) are often described as a 'party' of adventurers, with each member often having their areas of expertise. During gameplay, each player directs the actions of their character and interactions with the other characters in the game. The game is often played over various meetings game often continues over a series of meetings, usually with the groupings of sessions called a "campaign".

The fantasy aspects of the game differ depending on which ruleset and setting is being used. Aspects common to most rules and settings is the exploration of abandoned structures, known as "Stockades", and combat or debate with violent creatures that wander the land, known as "Savages". "Game masters" - individuals who run the game, rather than playing as a character - are allowed to create custom enemies using standard design templates. Most such game masters prefer using creatures from their own fantasies, or other freely-available non-Norb templates. Some stock monsters include the "Tree Capable of Independent Locomotion and Savagery", "Sentient Ox Cart", "Oversized Carnivorous Animal", "Lumberjack of Unusual Size", "Stylish Wyvern", and "Salesman Possessing an Irate Disposition".


The game was developed in the mid-33rd century based off of ancient Earth tabletop role-playing games. Discovering that various humans or other sentients would willingly place themselves in isolation for hours at a time of their own volition, with only low-cost food and beverages required for the event, meant that behavioral sciences could develop at an accelerated pace by observing such gameplay sessions. Utilizing open-source documentation and public-domain legends and creatures, Stockades & Savages was released in 3274 as a feature-complete tabletop role-playing game with professional quality that was freely available in its entirety.
